2018 Connousseur’s Trip to Drayton Hall and Middleton
National Historic Landmarks
March 6th, 2018
Thank you everyone, but this event is Now SOLD OUT!
Spend the day visiting these two spectacular properties along the Ashley River near Charleston.
10:00 a.m. – Arrive at Drayton Hall for a special Connoisseur’s Tour of the earliest and finest example of fully executed Palladian architecture, in the country and the oldest preserved plantation house open for touring.
Drayton Hall’s preservation philosophy was groundbreaking at the time of acquisition from the family and is still unique among historic sites today. Rather than restore the house, the property was stabilized, allowing the architecture and building to tell the story of Drayton Hall. The bedrock of this Philosophy, is that old buildings enrich our lives and deserve good stewardship.
12:00 p.m. – Lunch at Middleton Place
After lunch, we will have the rest of the afternoon to visit the magnificent gardens of Middleton Place, which are the oldest landscaped gardens in America. In early March, we should be greeted with a glorious display of ancient camellias and early spring flowering trees. We will also tour the house remaining from the destruction of the Civil War. The house, built in 1755, is the birthplace of a signer of the Declaration of Independence and tells the story of the prominent Middleton family.
